A New School Year, and So Much to Look Forward To

A New School Year, and So Much to Look Forward To

By Dr. Katchia J.  Gethers

Chief Executive Officer, Charleston Education Partners

As a former school leader, I love the beginning of a new school year.

There is simply nothing quite like it. The freshly cleaned hallways. Teachers putting the finishing touches on their classrooms. Families making sure everything is ready. Students walking through the doors with a mixture of excitement, nervousness, and anticipation. And, of course, those first-day pictures that parents insist on taking, even when our children think they are too old for them.

I remember that feeling well.

As a school leader, the beginning of the year was always filled with excitement and possibility. No matter what happened the year before, a new school year gave us another opportunity to get it right, to reach a student we may not have reached before, to strengthen a relationship with a family, to encourage a teacher, and to create a school community where children felt seen, supported, and capable of doing great things.

Although my role has changed, that excitement has not.

Today, as CEO of Charleston Education Partners, I have the opportunity to support students from a different vantage point. While I may no longer stand in a school hallway each morning, my commitment to the children, families, educators, and school communities that make Charleston special remains just as strong.

And I still believe what I believed as a school leader: our children do their best when they know the adults around them are working together for them.

Over the past several months, I have spent a great deal of time listening. I have listened to parents talk about what they want for their children. I have listened to educators share both their hopes and challenges. I have listened to community members who genuinely want to help but sometimes are not sure where to begin.

What I continue to hear is that Charleston cares deeply about its children.

Now, we have to turn that care into action.

Supporting our students cannot be the responsibility of educators alone. Our schools need families, businesses, nonprofit organizations, faith communities, civic leaders, and neighbors standing alongside them. There are so many ways to help. Mentor a student. Volunteer at a school. Support a teacher. Create an internship. Help a family connect with a resource. Or simply ask, “What do you need, and how can I help?”

Sometimes the most important thing we can do is show up.

And not just for the first day.

Our children need us when the new backpacks are no longer new, when the work becomes more difficult, when the excitement of August gives way to the demands of the school year, and when a student needs someone to remind them that one difficult day does not determine their future.

That is the work I am excited about this year at Charleston Education Partners.

We will continue listening. We will continue connecting people and resources. We will continue strengthening relationships between our schools and our community. And we will continue creating opportunities for people who care about children to turn that care into meaningful support.

As a former school leader, I know there will be challenging days this year. But I also know there will be beautiful ones, first books read, goals reached, friendships formed, championships won, college acceptance letters opened, careers discovered, and students realizing they are capable of more than they imagined.

Those are the moments that keep us going.

So, to our students, educators, families, and school leaders across Charleston: have a wonderful school year.

And to the rest of us, let’s make sure they know they are not doing this alone.

Let’s listen. Let’s partner. Let’s encourage. Let’s show up.

Our children are counting on us, and I cannot think of a better reason to get to work.
