A Season of Change: Watching Our Children Grow

A Season of Change: Watching Our Children Grown

By Dr. Katchia Gethers, CEO, Charleston Education Partners

There is something special about fall.

The air begins to feel different. The days grow a little shorter. The leaves slowly change from green to shades of gold, orange, and red. Everywhere we look, nature reminds us that change is happening.

Our children are changing, too.

Sometimes their growth is easy to see. They get taller. Their clothes fit differently. Their interests change. Their voices become more confident.

But some of the most meaningful changes are not as obvious.

A child begins to enjoy a subject that once frustrated them. A student who was once hesitant starts speaking up in class. A young person learns how to handle disappointment differently. They discover a new talent, form a new friendship, or begin to see possibilities for themselves that they could not see before.

Growth often happens in small moments.

And just like the changing leaves, every child changes at a different pace.

At Charleston Education Partners, we spend a great deal of time thinking about what children need to thrive. Strong schools are certainly part of that equation, but so are strong families, supportive communities, caring educators, and adults who take the time to notice what is happening in a child’s life.

Children need people who see them.

They need us to recognize not only where they are today, but also who they are becoming.

As parents, educators, neighbors, mentors, and community partners, we have an opportunity to encourage that growth. Sometimes encouragement means celebrating an achievement. Other times, it means offering patience through a difficult season or reminding a child that one setback does not define their future.

Fall teaches us that change does not happen all at once.

One leaf turns, then another. Slowly, the landscape begins to look different.

The same is true for our children.

Day by day, lesson by lesson, experience by experience, they are becoming more independent, more curious, more capable, and more aware of the world around them.

So, as we enjoy this season, let’s take a moment to really look at the children in our lives.

What has changed since the beginning of the school year?

What new strength are they beginning to show?

What do they need from us in this season?

And perhaps most importantly, have we told them that we see their growth?

The leaves will continue to change, and eventually another season will come. Our children will continue changing, too.

Let’s make sure that along the way, they know they have families, schools, and communities that believe in who they are, and in who they are becoming.
